Sure STEPS offers one to one peer support to pregnant women and parents from Tower Hamlets who are struggling with the challenges of parenting from pregnancy up to the first year with the baby. We are looking for volunteers to provide emotional support, a listening ear and to signposting parents to relevant local services in Tower Hamlets. The Peer Mentor Support Volunteer will also raise awareness of the services provided at the local Children Centres and encourage families to register and benefit from the services and the support available.

Volunteering for the Sure STEPS project gives the opportunity to Tower Hamlets residents to attend a free accredited training “OCNLR Level 2 Award in Peer Mentoring” and to achieve the relevant award. Volunteers will be equipped with the background knowledge of what is involved in providing support in pregnancy and during the first year of life of a baby.

Having completed the training, Volunteers Peer Supporter will need to commit 2 – 4 hours per week to support the parent they are matched with as well as to raise awareness of the services provided by the local Children’s Centres. Regular ongoing support will be provided, both individually and with other Peer Supporters. Group supervisions will take place every month.

Volunteer expenses (e.g. travel cost) will be paid. Training (including accreditation) to OCNLR Level 2 Award in Peer Mentoring is free.

Potential Peer Support volunteers need to: commit to a minimum of 6 months of volunteering after completing the training; be parents or have had experience of caring for a baby; and be passionate about supporting local parents.
