The courses is designed to help people to better self manage their health condition and improve their quality of life. The courses runs once a week for 2.5 hours for the duration of 6 weeks. There is a 15 minute break in each session when refreshments will be available. The courses will help you learn:

  • Ways to manage your symptoms and improve how you feel
  • Ways to deal with anger, fear, frustration, isolation, fatigue and depression
  • Relaxation
  • Better breathing
  • Action planning
  • Healthy eating and nutrition
  • Basic exercise, how to build your level of fitness, flexibility and strength
  • Problem-solving skills in your daily life

RF, 65 year old Somali female(Impact/Testimony)

RF has back and knee pain, she cannot sit for too long and walk for a long period. She cannot do my house work as she used to do, it takes longer to do think and she feel anger and frustration She used to go to the Mosque for Friday prayer . She doesn’t go out much now, and she said that being at home all day makes me sad and isolated.

What life style changes she made as a result of attending the course?

 Since attending the course she said she said she now asks her Dr about the medications she takes, she tells her family how she feels and asks for help with house work. She told us “I am comfortable taking my walking stick with me. I tell myself it’s a tool that will help me to be active”.

She went on to say:

“I walk more and take breaks, so I don't over do it. I eat more fruit and vegetable, balance diet, always remember the plate, I use the breathing and distraction techniques for the pain. It helps me to be more active I don't worry and get angry when I am in pain. I also go out and meet my friends and I go to the Mosque for Friday prayer. I go to the Islington Somali Community Centre every Tuesday; we discuss our progress and go for walks too”
